Bears of Blue River Save the Civic on Feb. 8
Bears of Blue River will play a homecoming show as a "Save the Civic" Fundraiser at Muncie Civic Theater on Monday, February 8th.
The doors are at 6:30 PM with a 7 PM start time. A portion of all proceeds go to the "Save the Civic" fundraiser.
This date falls two and a half weeks into The Bears of Blue River two and half month tour schedule. The Bears of Blue River (Chicago, IL) will be touring most of early 2010 in support of their new EP "The Killer Bee Scare" which was engineered and produced with friends, Margot and the Nuclear So and So's. (Sony/Epic)
The Bears of Blue River are celebrating the Tuesday, January 26th Release and hit the road Wednesday, January 20th for a circuit running through the end of March. Their travels will take them all through the Midwest, up and down the East Coast, to the warmth of Florida and through the Gulf of Mexico to Texas for SXSW.
Prominent stops along their travels include a Daytrotter Session in early February, a performance on KARE 11 Showcase MN (NBC) with an average viewing audience of 100,000, a cozy show at Arlene's Grocery in New York's Lower East Side for representatives from Sony, lead Music stories in the circulated Midwest entertainment rag NUVO, as well as Redeye and Metromix features, Hype Machine feature, UK Write Ups, greeting the audience of 2,000 locals for the Ghent Bar Tour in Virgina, and a wide ranging, eclectic mix of venues from Bowling Alleys to Art Galleries.
All the while Minneapolis based, Tinderbox Music will be pushing the EP hard via the College Radio Circuit for a National Radio Campaign.
The Bears of Blue River: The Killer Bee Scare (EP) ZIP http://www.sendspace.com/file/icfntr
recent press: "On Killer Bee, Bears frontman Gavin Wilkinson set out to make an album with melodies that stick in your head. He succeeded. His band has crafted an indie folk-pop gem that blends styles ranging from the mid-century styles of Johnny and June Carter Cash to Simon and Garfunkel, Roy Orbison to Frankie Lymon....The benefits of his musical education are evident on The Killer Bee Scare, with five catchy songs that linger in your mind. Along with Gard's show-stealing vocals, McManus becomes a musical tailor, weaving his bass through the melodies like thread, pulling all the elements together into a cohesive unit while also giving the songs a buoyant boost. Wilkinson ditches the somber mood that drove This Story and replaces it with a lighter introspection on relationships and age. Finally, his male band mates come together and drape the compositions with doo-wop harmonies, a perfect element to an already pleasurable listening experience." - NUVO
"Chicago sextet The Bears of Blue River serve up bubbly indie-pop with a pinch of country twang and cutesy boy/girl vocals on their newly released debut EP, "The Killer Bee Scare." The combination of jangly guitars, exuberant harmonies and gently chugging rhythms works wonders on record, and will likely hold up just as strongly on stage tonight"- Metromix
"a truly delightful mix of folk pop that is simply charming (and cleverly carries enough of an edge to avoid ever becoming too saccharine or twee). Bubblegum is carried along on a jaunty melody, sweet vocals, and a catchy chorus that makes you think of waking up in a log cabin to early morning sunshine. Crayola begins as a slightly more subdued number before a bold chorus stirs everything up, and Betty Homemaker is carried along on a trademark Johnny Cash beat with classic "his and hers" vocals that playfully build to a swelling, climactic finish. The Bears Of Blue River are from Chicago and we like them a whole lot. " - The Mad Mackerel (UK)
"Symphonic melodies, folky guitar plucking, and the all-around peaceful aura of the music and vocals caught my ear! I tend to like bands that use both a male and a female voice in creaming melodies and harmonies. Bears of Blue River do that brilliantly." - Sunsetintherearview.com
"These lovely, glowing, folksy little pop numbers bop right along with charming male & female vocals and strong instrumentation." - WLUR 91.5
"Your music makes me want to walk naked through the woods!" - NBC Correspondent Rob Hudson

Once upon a time, the young prince Pippin longed to discover the secret of true happiness and fulfillment. He sought it in the glories of the battlefield, the temptations of the flesh and the intrigues of political power. In the end, he found it in the simple pleasures of home and family. Written by Roger Hirson and Bob Fosse, this hip, tongue-in-cheek, fairy tale captivated Broadway audiences and continues to appeal to the young at heart everywhere. The energetic pop-influenced score by three-time Oscar(R)-winning composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz ("Godspell," "Children of Eden" and the animated films "Pocahontas," "The Hunchback Of Notre Dame" and "The Prince Of Egypt") bursts with one show stopping number after another, from soaring ballads to infectious dance numbers. Immortalized onstage and screen, this classic tells the story of Annie Sullivan and her student, blind and mute Helen Keller. The Miracle Worker dramatizes the volatile relationship between the lonely teacher and her charge. Helen, trapped in her secret world, is violent, spoiled, and almost sub-human and treated by her family as such. Only Annie realizes that there is a mind and spirit waiting to be rescued from the dark, tortured silence. Following scenes of intense physical and emotional struggle, Annie's success with Helen finally comes with the utterance of a single word: "water". Helen Keller went on to become an author of 14 books and one of the most influential speakers in the world. Join us as we experience the beginnings of this amazing story. Directed by Robby Tompkins.

Juried Student (K-12) Art Show for Delaware Co. at Gallery 308
A love for the arts begins at home--and at school. At least that's the belief of Gallery 308, which is opening its 6th annual juried student art show this week. The public is invited to stop by and see what our young people are doing. There's a free reception at the Gallery, beginning at 5 p.m., February 4, the First Thursday of the month. The nonprofit community art gallery provides a juried show each year for Delaware County students in grades K through 12. It's a juried show, so awards will be presented at the reception. Students from Muncie Central, Delta, Wapahani, and Wes-Del schools - plus at least one independent student - participated. One-hundred ten entries were submitted, with 74 accepted into the juried process. The students' artwork will be displayed at the Gallery. This year the Gallery has offered a $500 Art Education Award for the school whose students earned the most points for their arts involvement. "After Christmas break, the competition [for the Art Education Award] started to heat up with more and more kids and teachers reporting," said Karen Fisher, Gallery 308 Board member who helped coordinate the show. "You can see the scores (so far) on the Gallery website at www.gallery308.org." But, she cautions, the name of the school that wins this award won't be announced until the opening reception. Students earned points for their school by attending art gallery openings, visiting museums and other art venues. The school with the most points wins the cash award which is to be used by the school to purchase art supplies. The winner of this award will be announced at the reception. Judges for the juried show were Sherry Powell of Jack's Camera Shop (for primary school artists) and Mary Slafkosky of the Muncie Children's Museum (secondary school artists). Artwork on display was framed by students and teachers who attended several framing workshops offered at the Gallery in January. The Muncie & Delaware County Community Foundation and Noon Rotary Club provided grants in support of this show, as did individual donors from the community. Additional support for the juried student show is provided by Pamela DeMarris and Jim Meadows, Toyota of Muncie, Frances Petty Sargent and Art Mart. The Artist Within, The Muncie Children's Museum, and Art Mart donated gift certificates for the honorable mention awards. Gallery 308 is a 501(c)(3) community art gallery which exists to provide exhibition space for artists, encourage innovative work and serve the community as a cultural and educational resource. Contributions to Gallery 308 are tax-deductible. For more information about gallery hours, volunteer and donor opportunities, please call 765-289-8575.

Paint Story: New Abstracts by Eric Ernstberger at Gordy's in February
Paint Story: New Abstracts by Eric Ernstberger is the featured exhibit this month at Gordy Fine Art in downtown Muncie. The prolific painter, who employs a knife in place of the typical brushes, merges his other interests - landscape architecture and writing - when creating his color-filled works of art. The artist admits to an attraction to drama. "My subjects reflect things I like, things I fear, dreams, and places I've been. Like the drama in a good story, I appreciate the tension of a contradiction or the truth imbedded in an underlying notion." Abstract art is usually traced back to Picasso and his contemporaries, Braque and Matisse. Their rebellion against traditional painting techniques and nature-derived subject matter took place around 1910. One hundred years later, abstraction in art is still fresh, and still being mined for its treasures of raw energy and intellectual content. Muncie artist, Ernstberger, finds painting with a knife not dissimilar to writing with a pen. "Both represent storytelling exercises, as both can morph fact and fiction and employ the use of modifiers; words are to colors as adjectives are to strokes, or adverbs to hues." Ernstberger will give a short talk about his work during the First Thursday artist reception on February 4th at 6 PM. Hours of the reception are 5 to 8 PM and the public is invited to attend. Light refreshments will be served. The exhibit may also be viewed throughout the month during normal business hours at the gallery/frame shop: Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5:30, Saturday, 9 to 3, or by appointment. Ernstberger is a Principal in the firm, Rundell, Erstberger Associates, LLC, located in downtown Muncie. Gordy Fine Art and Framing is located at 224 East Main Street. For more information call 765-284-8422 or visit www.gordyframing.com.

Heart of the City Meets Wednesday in New Location!
The Heart of the City (formerly Muncie Downtown Business Council) begins the new year in a new meeting location! The group will have its monthly meeting Wednesday, January 27, at 3 p.m. in the ballroom of the Patterson Building.
Please note this is a change of venue from the conference room in the Fisher Building (Star Press building), where the group has met for the past five years. Please pass it on to your friends and peers, and anyone who may not be aware of the venue change.
Immediately following the Heart of the City meeting, the Muncie Arts and Culture Council will meet in the same room to discuss our pursuits of state cultural district designation. Anyone is welcome to stay for that meeting as well.
Along with the change of venue, Heart of the City members can expect a change in the format of the monthly meetings, held on the last Wednesday of every month. Meetings in the coming months will feature speakers and workshops and new business spotlights. In addition to the usual downtown news and events updates, attendees will be encouraged to offer feedback and discussion on current and relevant issues in Downtown Muncie.
Anyone with an interest in Downtown Muncie is encouraged to attend any and all public meetings concerning improvement of our city and the downtown district. Take pride in your community, and get involved as we enter the next stage of redevelopment!

Free Framing & Matting Workshops at Gallery 308 in January
Will you put off framing that nice giclee print you got for Christmas? What about the precious wedding photo that still hasn't been framed? What's your excuse?
If cost is holding you back (i.e. the cost of framing and matting), Gallery 308 has a wonderful offer for you! FREE, hands-on matting & framing workshops will be held at the Gallery throughout January, weekday afternoons from 4:00 to 5:30, and Saturday mornings from 10:30 to noon.
In exchange for learning how to do your own framing (it's easier than you may think!), you will be helping the gallery to frame the student art for the February juried student art exhibit for grades K through 12.
Your attendance at the Gallery 308 framing workshops can also earn points for a Delaware County school as the schools compete for the 2010 Art Education Award. The school with the most points will use the $500 award to purchase art materials. The winner will be announced in February.
Help to promote art education in our schools and learn a useful money-saving skill at the same time! To register for a Gallery 308 framing workshop, call Karen Fisher at the Art Mart, 284-2919.
The workshops will take place at Gallery 308, in the Founders Gallery. Gallery 308 is located at 308 East Main Street in downtown Muncie.
Gallery 308 is a 501(c)(3) community art gallery which exists to provide exhibition space for artists, encourage innovative work and serve the community as a cultural and educational resource. The Gallery opens a new exhibit every First Thursday. Contributions to Gallery 308 are tax-deductible. For more information about gallery hours, volunteer and donor opportunities, please call 765-289-8575.

"Wood, Metal, Paper and Ink" Print Show on Exhibit at Gordy's
The annual printmaking exhibit will be hung for the month of January at Gordy Fine Art and Framing in downtown Muncie. Wood, Metal, Paper and Ink was curated by BSU printmaking professors, Sarojini and David Johnson.
"The works are all by Ball State printmakers," noted Sarojini, "including David and I, and our current and former students. Most of the works are woodcuts and etchings."
For those unfamiliar with printmaking techniques, an "etching" or "intaglio," uses a metal plate, which is "etched" with chemicals to produce the desired image. Widely used as a printmaking technique since the Renaissance, it is still a popular method of producing multiple images, often with great detail and color.
This will be the fourth annual print show hosted by the Gordy's at their downtown gallery. "Prints, especially straight from the university setting, are an excellent stepping on point for new or young art patrons," Brian Gordy said of the upcoming exhibit. "Often more reasonably priced than paintings, prints are highly collectible, and if they're properly framed, will last many lifetimes."
The prints in this exhibit also have the prestige of being hand selected by the renowned professors and will include print books as well as the traditional two-dimensional format.
An opening reception will be held during the First Thursday monthly event, January 7, 2010, from 5 to 8 PM. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend. Parking is available on the street and in the Merchants Bank lot across the street.
Gordy Fine Art and Framing is located at 224 East Main Street, next to Civic Theatre. In addition to the reception, this exhibit may be viewed during normal business hours, Monday - Friday, 9 AM to 5:30 PM, Saturday, 9 to 3, through January 30th, or by appointment. The Muncie Action Plan needs you! This is your community, get involved and make your voice heard as we identify what is important to Muncie's future. Come to one of five public meetings Dec.1, 2 or 3. See below for meeting times and places. MITS will provide free bus service to all the public meeting locations.
This may be the only plan that is being developed by the community, for the community through Public Input Meetings that will allow us to express our values and aspirations for Muncie.
Through a process of talking to fellow citizens in small groups (8-12 people) your thoughts will be captured and form the basis of a plan which will guide the City for years to come.
These meetings will begin with a full overview of the process and then break into small groups of 8 - 12 where you will share your ideas with neighbors and colleagues in a personal, meaningful, and directed process. All information will be collected by a facilitator.
The final product - The Muncie Action Plan - will serve as a blueprint for the future and will include specific - and implementable - action steps for short term and mid-term projects. This will not only capture the values and hopes, but provide an action plan, it will be the basis for planning for the City in the years to come. "Sanders Family Christmas" at Muncie Civic Theatre
Muncie Civic Theatre presents Sanders Family Christmas in the Studio Theatre, December 4th-5th, 11th-13th, & 17th-19th. Thursday through Saturday performances are at 8:00pm and the Sunday matinee on December 13th is at 2:00pm. Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for students.
In this sequel to the ever popular hit Smoke on the Mountain, the Sanders family returns to Mount Pleasant, North Carolina, home of the Mount Pleasant Pickle Factory. It's Christmas Eve, 1941. Reverend Oglethorpe has invited them to the Baptist Church to sing and witness, getting the congregation into the down home holiday spirit before the boys, including one of the Sanders' own, are shipped off to World War II.
More than two dozen Christmas carols, many of them vintage hymns, and hilarious yuletide stories from the more or less devote Sanders family keep the audience laughing, clapping and singing along with bluegrass Christmas favorites. Richly entertaining, this wildly infections musical brings cheer to audiences eager to see how their friends from Smoke on the Mountain have been getting along.
Tickets can now be purchased online at www.munciecivic.org or by calling 288.PLAY or by stopping by the Box Office, Tuesday-Friday from Noon-6:00pm at 216 E. Main Street in Muncie. Tickets are also available at the door one hour prior to the show for cash walk-in sales only.

Lt. Governor Becky Skillman Welcomes the Heart of the City in Muncie as an Indiana Main Street Participant at Statehouse Ceremony
Lieutenant Governor Becky Skillman welcomed the Heart of the City to the Indiana Main Street program at a ceremony on Friday at the Indiana Statehouse. Indiana Main Street is administered by the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA). The program provides assistance to participating Indiana cities and towns for economic development efforts in their local downtown and commercial business districts.
"Viable downtowns are crucial to the economic health of our state, and we need strong business districts now more than ever considering the current economic environment," said Lt. Governor Skillman. "The Indiana Main Street program is creating opportunities for revitalization and restoration, as well as encouraging a favorable environment for businesses."
The City of Muncie will join more than 90 other Indiana Main Street communities dedicated to the revitalization of their downtown communities. Indiana Main Street is founded on a community-driven "Four Point Approach" to downtown development: organization, design, promotion and economic restructuring.
The Heart of the City in Muncie has been actively involved in downtown development for the past 10 years, completing projects like facade restorations, street renovations, and new housing projects to increase the downtown population, as well as hosting community events.
The group is currently working on projects like a public park and green space, as well as pursuing avenues to develop new business opportunities. The goals of the group are to continue redevelopment and economic growth, create a unified marketing plan, and use their historic heritage to establish downtown Muncie as an arts and cultural district.
OCRA's Executive Director David Terrell said, "We are honored to have the Heart of the City as part of the Indiana Main Street family. They know and understand the importance of a thriving downtown and have community members willing to assist in the revitalization efforts of their downtown. We are very proud of Muncie and are happy to recognize them today."

New Contemporary Art Gallery To Make Debut In Downtown Muncie: Art & Soul By Phoebe Art Gallery
Artist Phoebe Wantz is opening a new art gallery, Art and Soul by Phoebe Art Gallery, in Downtown Muncie.
The grand opening will be on Friday, October 30, 2009 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. with an artist reception starting at 6 p.m. at 409 South Walnut Street, downtown Muncie.
Ms. Wantz is a former art major at Ball State, but better known locally for her work in Community Theater, has currently turned her focus to her artistic talent and established a new contemporary art gallery, the "Art and Soul by Phoebe Art Gallery."
Wantz currently has about 100 completed canvases and these paintings cover a variety of eclectic themes - from Southwest art, religious themes, abstracts to nudes. One can tell by Wantz's work that the "Muse" has really taken her by storm, since she has painted all of these works since March, 2008. Her paintings recently took first, second and third place in acrylics at a juried art show at the Minnetrista Cultural Center.
Multi-media artist Michael DuQuette will be the artistic director and curator of the gallery. Mr. DuQuette recently moved to Muncie from Chicago where he received his BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Mr. DuQuette is a rare artist in that he displays convincing accomplishment both in abstract expressionism and a kind of "funk-neo-realism" with which he creates portraits, cityscapes/landscapes and other urban vistas in a decidedly off beat style which is visually provocative, compositionally exciting and wild with color. DuQuette has received several awards over the last 25 years and has shown his work nationally and internationally. The gallery's Artist-in-Residence, Mrs. Hye-Sook JEE, will be the on-site studio artist creating traditional Korean paper art using only paper to form bowls, lamps, tables and sculptures. Ms. JEE and her family just recently moved to Muncie from Korea. Not only will the public be invited to enjoy her work, but to SEE her work.
This new art gallery's mission and motto is: "Artist First". Art and Soul by Phoebe Gallery will be focusing on the art and artists which includes low commissions on sales: 20% for established/up and coming artists and 10% for student artists (currently enrolled) with no membership fees, which is unheard of in traditional galleries.
The gallery will be providing a Senior High School Student Scholarship Program and month long show with the scholarship awarded in the late spring of 2010. Plus there will be monthly featured artists, periodic juried art shows, poetry readings, book signings, play readings, musical presentations and other artistic adventures in the future.
Tanglevine Crossing, of Farmland, Indiana, will also be adding some selected pieces to be displayed and sold at the Gallery. This is an exciting opportunity for local and out-of-state artists to display their work while bringing the spirit of the arts to the Muncie community. The Art and Soul by Phoebe Art Gallery is seeking artists for upcoming shows located downtown at 409 S. Walnut Street. It is certain to be a showplace of fresh and exceptional talent. The gallery welcomes diverse, unique artistry encompassing all media forms. Interested artisans should contact Art and Soul by Phoebe Art Gallery at 765-288-0005. Contact Information: Phoebe Wantz, Owner/Artist/Director Michael DuQuette, Artistic Director and Curator Art and Soul by Phoebe Art Gallery Phone: 765-288-0005 Cell: 765-717-5456 Email: artandsoulbyphoebegallery@gmail.com
