Muncie Children's Museum Collecting Non-Perishable Food for Second Harvest Food Bank
Help spread holiday cheer by bringing a non-perishable food item to the Muncie Children's Museum for the Second Harvest Food Bank of East Central Indiana, and receive $1 off general admission, per person, throughout the entire month of December. The Muncie Children's Museum has teamed up with Second Harvest Food Bank of East Central Indiana to collect food items for people in and around East Central Indiana. To help, bring a non-perishable food item to the Museum, and receive $1 off general admission, per person, throughout the month of December. This offer is not valid with any other Muncie Children's Museum coupon. Non-perishable items such as canned meats, vegetables, fruit, peanut butter, cereal rice, chicken and tuna are preferred. Second Harvest Food Bank relies on private and foundation support to fund our hunger-relief efforts in east central Indiana. Second Harvest provides emergency food to more than 7,900 people each week by collecting millions of dollars worth of food a year and distributing to families and individuals in need through emergency food pantries, shelters, and kitchens. Polar Express Returns to Wysor Street Depot
Mr. Blue, Wish the Fish and Kohl?s are proud to present a magical evening at the Historic Wysor Street Depot with Polar Express. Santa and Mrs. Claus will make their way to the Historic Wysor Street Depot December 5th and December 6th from 6:00 p.m. ? 9:00 p.m. Climb on to Santa?s lap and share your holiday wishes with him while Jack?s Camera shop captures the moment with a picture. Listen to our special guest readers as they read the story of the Polar Express. Santa?s elves will make sure you take home a silver bell to remind you of your journey. Sip hot chocolate as you listen to carolers share the songs of the season. You can also visit Ron Orebaugh?s Grand Grilling to Go. Ron will be set-up in the parking lot of the Depot. New Year's Eve Celebration Downtown
Downtown Development Partnership, MSD Recycling and Education Program and The PhyXTGears Robotics Team will host a Community New Year's Eve Celebration with a "Times Square" type ball drop and fireworks at midnight. Festivities will begin December 31st at 10:30pm on the Delaware County Courthouse Square with a candlelight walk to the event area in the 400 block of Walnut St. Everyone is invited to bring a candle or flashlight and join us as we celebrate the strength of community in 2009. The event will feature live music from Central High School Students: CHS Jazz followed by the party sounds of Doc Peterson, Dunn and Simmons. Warm tents, kid's activities, fire barrels, a new year wish tree, and projection of NYC's Time Square celebration will keep everyone entertained as we gear up for the big ball drop and fireworks at midnight! This is an alcohol free, family friendly event. Our local "robotics team" PhyXTGears, composed of high school students from all schools in Muncie and Delaware have designed a New Year's Eve ball, to be lowered from a giant crane at midnight. The downtown merchants have contributed nearly half of the money needed for the fireworks display. The Sound of Music at Muncie Civic Theatre
Muncie Civic Teatre presents "The Sound of Music." Performances are December 5th-7th, 11th-13th, and 19th-20th. Thursday through Saturday performances are at 7:30pm and the Sunday matinee is at 2:00pm. This classic story features music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. It was the last musical ever written by Rogers & Hammerstein and is coming to Muncie Civic Theatre as a fantastic holiday theatre experience. The Sound of Music is set in 1930's Austria, where a young woman named Maria is failing miserably in her attempts to become a nun. When the Navy captain Georg von Trapp writes to the convent asking for a governess that can handle his seven mischievous children, Maria is given the task. When Maria arrives, she is initially met with hostility and skepticism, but her kindness, understanding, and sense of fun soon draws the children to her and brings some much-needed joy into all their lives - including the Captain's. "The Art and Craft of Christmas" at Gallery 308
 Looking for something truly unique to get you in the holiday spirit? How about taking a stroll down East Main Street in Muncie on First Thursday (December 4)? Stop in at Gallery 308 at 308 East Main at 7 p.m. for the opening of a new exhibition, "The Art & Craft of Christmas." Thanks to the generosity of ornament collectors Hal Caldwell, Dale Potts, Martin George and Joshua Burton, an amazing display of holiday ornaments will amaze you. "It is our Christmas card to the community," says Gallery Board president Martin George, whose contribution to the exhibit is a large tree covered by numerous blown-glass ornaments, mostly of German and Eastern European origin. See 200 nutcrackers from Hal Caldwell's collection, along with a vintage silver tree from the Sixties, complete with a rotating color wheel, donated for the exhibit by another collector, Josh Burton. Dale Potts' collection of bubble lights dating from the Second World War is also on display. At 7 p.m. in the Gallery's Founders Room, Potts will give a short talk on the history of bubble lights. The exhibit continues through December 12. The public is welcome; admission is free. Gallery 308 is a non-profit art gallery located at 308 East Main, Muncie. Enchanted Luminaria Walk at Minnetrista

Turtle Prints on Exhbit at Gordy's Through January
 Watercolorist Brian Gordy has been painting local turtles for several years. What began as a curiosity about the health of Delaware County rivers and wetlands turned into a large body of work documenting the various terrapin communities and their habits, interactions and even estimated ages. From the riverbanks, Gordy was able to determine that not only were the turtle populations healthy, but many of them had survived more turbulent times, as evidenced by their huge sizes. As an artist, he admired the flat and domed shells, the subtle skin colorations and the way light played off the various planes of the prehistoric-looking creatures' backs. "Turtles hold my attention and are seductive subjects for watercolor paintings. Forced to sit quietly, least they scatter, I've been amazed to see the formations they create. I simply capture moments that have certain elements - a variety of textures, strong lights and darks, interesting foreground/background play and sometimes, a sense of humor, " offers the painter. "Recently I came upon a pair of stacked turtles. Unusual, because they were simply sunning themselves, and stayed stacked while I snapped image after image of them." Recently recognized as an "Indiana Artisan," Gordy continues to paint the wet world of the turtle and has a new website in the works to share his paintings and giclees with patrons from outside his Muncie studio and combination gallery/frame shop. For local art and turtle appreciators, he will exhibit thirty five different scenes and groupings at Gordy Fine Art and Framing for the holiday season. An opening reception will be held during the monthly First Thursday event, from 5 to 9 PM. Refreshments will be served and public is invited to attend. "A Time for Christmas" at Muncie Civic Theatre
Muncie Civic Theatre presents "A Time for Christmas," a Broadway-style musical with a heartwarming message. The show will be at Muncie Civic Theatre, 216 E. Main St. in Downtown Muncie. Performance times are Thanksgiving weekend: Friday, Nov. 28th, and Saturday, Nov. 29th at 7:30 PM and Sunday, Nov. 30th at 2 PM. In the tradition of Dickens' A Christmas Carol, a modern day Scrooge-like work-a-holic, Bill, learns to open his heart to the season by being guided on a mystical journey to see how Christmases through history were celebrated. The journey starts in Bethlehem, travels to a medieval castle, then to Puritan England, followed by a Victorian orphanage, and ending in a quick musical tour of Christmases through decades of the 20th century. Bill is then given the opportunity to make a difference in the life of a single mother and daughter who are spending their first Christmas alone and he must choose between his old self-centered ways and the risk of opening his heart to love. A Time for Christmas features a cast of 50 people of all ages, including 20 children. There will be a live 13-piece orchestra and it's a great entertainment option for the whole family to enjoy. Suzanne Marie Lambert Exhibit "De la France et de l'Espagne" at The Artist Within
 The Artist Within will feature an exhibit by Suzanne Marie Lambert titled "De la France et de l'Espagne" during December. There will be an opening reception during First Thursday, Dec.4th from 5-9pm. There will also be live music by Bryce Taylor. The reception is free and the public is invited. Suzanne Marie Lambert splits her time between Europe and the US. She works from her 2 studios, one located in Cincinnati where she resides with her son Watts Dietrich, the other in Southwestern France. She works with mixedmedia on canvas and paper. Her work is abstract and contemporary. In the 1970's she studied ceramics and sculpture, metal crafting and welding. She is self taught in painting, drawing and photography. Lambert studied classical ballet at Jordan College of Music at Butler University 1972-1975. She attended Indiana University 1981-1984, studying modern dance, psychology, specializing in sports psychology. In 2001 she was invited by Miami University of Oxford, Ohio to teach abstract painting as a guest session artist. In 2002 she worked in the Motion Picture Film Industry on the Jim Amatulli film, ?Artworks?. Lambert worked on location during the filming of the movie; along with some art consulting, her paintings were used as those of the lead character,Emma, played by Virginia Madsen. Although her formal education is other than painting, sculpture, and photography, it is in these fields of art where her passion resides. With her love of photography, she built her own dark room when she was 18 years old. She began drawing and painting at the age of 3 and has continued to become a working artist.Lambert exhibits nationally and internationally. Her work is collected privately and corporately. She is available for commission work and for design consultation. ?My intention is to visually demonstrate thru color, tone, and composition the energy and underlying movement within All of life. Energy of life is evident to me; I wish to bring it to the attention of the viewer, to enhance perception, to lift the soul. I wish to express the beauty which I see and feel in this adventure we call ?Life?. Artworks to Spotlight Cartoonist and Illustrator Dan Wright
 Cartoonist and illustrator Dan Wright will be the featured artist during December at Artworks. An opening reception will be held during First Thursday, Dec. 4, from 5 to 8pm. Dan Wright has been a working cartoonist and illustrator for over 400 years and attributes his great longevity to obscurity and a propensity for stretching the truth. Dan was raised in Muncie and barely graduated from Muncie Southside High School where he was repeatedly sent to the dean for artistic differences. After serving three years in the U.S. Army, Dan attended the Herron School of Art and went on to become an award-winning graphic designer, illustrator and one of Muncie's three nationally syndicated cartoonists. His strip "Wildwood", which he co-wrote with childhood friend and fellow Muncie native, Tom Spurgeon, ran in about 80 papers from 1998 through 2003. For the past few years, in addition to co-writing and producing "Rustle the Leaf", an online, environmentally themed newspaper-style comic strip, Dan has studied storytelling and has finished the manuscript for his first children's picture book "Jaboo" After a 23 year absence, Dan has moved back to Muncie because he likes how lived in the place looks. At his Opening Reception on December 4, 2008 at ArtWorks Dan will read "Jaboo" in its entirety. Dan will also have many of his comic strips on exhibition in the gallery. IMPORTANT - The Downtown Business Council will meet a week earlier than our regular meeting time, which falls during the Thanksgiving holiday. The meeting will be next week on Wednesday, November 19th at 3pm in the Star Press building conference room. Muncie Downtown Business Council has three positions opening up on its Board of Directors, and is taking nominations for the next two-year term. A slate of nominees will be presented at next Wednesday's meeting, and the floor will be open to anyone who wishes to nominate herself or himself at that time. The Skin of Our Teeth at Muncie Civic Theatre's Main Street Studio

The story features the most ancient of characters and is derived from Biblical and classical personalities such as Adam, Eve, Cain, and Homer with all of them being mixed in with a modern society twist.
