30th Annual Delaware Co. Farm Festival Returns March 11th & 12th
The 2008 Delaware County Farm Festival (Muncie, IN) will be held March 11th and 12th on Tuesday and Wednesday. This 30th annual event, which is free to the public and open from 8:30 am to 8:00 pm will be held at the Delaware County Fairgrounds. With two big buildings full of many things to see and do, there are farm animals to interact with, (milking a cow, to watching sheep being sheared), farm equipment from old to new, and many booths showcasing Indiana agriculture. You can watch kettle corn and pork cracklings being cooked over an open fire and our rural storyteller telling stories and making music during school hours. There are special events in the evenings: Tuesday a Chicken BBQ dinner grilled and prepared by the Gaston Lions club and our Fundraising Auction at 6:00. (The funds that we raise enable us to keep admission free) Wednesday the local Pork Producers will be grilling pork chops and pork burgers and serving at 5:00 pm, the Children's Pedal Pull will begin at 5:30 pm in the main building. Concessions are available, with special lunches each day. Both nights the State Police will be giving away DNA Kits for children. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest at Muncie Civic Theatre

Downtown Business Council Meets Wednesday
The Muncie Downtown Business Council will meet this Wednesday, February 27th, at 3:00 pm in the Star Press building conference room. Topics on the agenda include upcoming spring events (St. Patty's Day parade and Spring Zing); update on the mall wall, coupon sheet and other downtown marketing efforts; and a report from Heart of the City. Information will also be given about the upcoming BSU Cardinal Chili Challenge, and sponsorship opportunities for businesses. You need not be a member to attend the meetings, and Downtown Business Council is not limited to businesses and merchants. Meetings typically last one hour. This is an excellent opportunity to network with your downtown peers, keep informed of downtown happenings, and learn all about the Downtown Business Council and our continued efforts to market your business and our downtown neighborhood. The next Downtown Business Council meeting will be Wednesday, March 26th at 3pm at Minnetrista, followed by a "Meet the Members Mixer." Members will be on hand to answer any questions about the Downtown Business Council, and membership applications will be available for anyone who wants to join. Gallery 308 to Show "New Ceramics Work"
"New Ceramics Work" by Neal and Bates opens at Gallery 308 for First Thursday March 6. Between them they have a wealth of experience?and a wealth of talent. "Ben Bates and Ted Neal: New Ceramics Work" will showcase the talents of these two ceramicists when their new exhibit opens March 6 at Gallery 308. Neal is an assistant professor of art at Ball State; Bates is a Ceramics Studio Artist living in Libertyville, Illinois and a ceramics instructor at the College of Lake County (Illinois). The opening reception for the pair's new exhibit is First Thursday, March 6 at the Gallery. The Gallery is located at 308 East Main in downtown Muncie. Admission to the 5:00 reception is free; light refreshments will be provided. Neal enjoys working in a dichotomy of styles. He is currently exploring both utility and sculpture within the realm of the clay vessel. Themes that dominate his sculptural work are the "proliferation of mass-produced industrial objects, the modern need for portability, and the veneration of the commonplace." He is especially interested in objects that are discarded or have disappeared into the background?objects that have gone from useful to garbage and sometimes back again. Bates is interested in the functional format as a realm of exploration but strives to transcend the utilitarian boundaries and function as sculptural elements. He uses the ideals of the vessel to clarify design and explore form as it relates to space. "To me, working in clay is more about composition, proportion and surface than it is about efficiency of use." Neal focuses on the fluidity of the clay during the forming processes. Its ability to stretch and twist is of great interest to the artist. He breaks potential forms into their component parts and reassembles them in innovative ways. Much of this takes place in his sketches and drawings. Bates likes to manipulate the "plasticity" of clay. He contrasts it by introducing hard edges and lines that interrupt and accentuate the flow of that softness. "I also want the skin of my pieces to heighten the viewer's awareness of the interior volume and function as a canvas for color and decoration." This often means that the surfaces undergo sandblasting and multiple firings. Neal earned his M.F.A. in Ceramics at Southern Illinois University (Edwardsville, IL) and holds a B.F.A. from Utah State University and an A.A.S. from Brigham Young University in Rexburg, Idaho. He has been head of the Ceramics Area at Ball State since 2006. Prior to coming to Ball State, he taught at Utah State. His recent exhibitions include 2007 shows at the Atrium Gallery (Ball State), Melwood Art Center in Louisville, KY (2007), and the University of Louisville, to name just a few. His work has been seen in this area at the Charlie Cummings Clay Studio in Ft. Wayne, at the Artist Within, and at numerous galleries in Utah and Pennsylvania. His work has received many awards. Ben Bates was born in Southern California, received degrees from Southern Illinois University (MFA) and the Kansas Art City Art Institute (BFA). He was head resident ceramic artist at Crabtree Farm (a living museum in Lake Bluff, IL) and lead consultant for the construction of the Sterling Hall Ceramics Center in Lake Forest, IL. His work has been featured at various exhibits throughout California, Pennsylvania, New Castle, Iowa and Illinois. In addition to his teaching assignment at the College of Lake County, Bates is adjunct faculty for Oakton Community College in Des Plaines, IL. His work was exhibited in the past year in Iowa City; Edwardsville, IL; Grayslake, IL; Rochester, NY; St. Louis, MO; Lancaster, PA; and St. Charles, IL; and can be found in numerous private collections as well. Gallery 308 is a 501(c)(3) community art gallery which exists to provide exhibition space for artists, encourage innovative work and serve the community as a cultural and educational resource. New Hours at Blue Bottle Coffee Shop
The Blue Bottle has new hours, and is open later! New hours are Mon - Wed 7 AM to 6 PM, Thurs - Sat 7 AM to 9 PM and Closed Sunday. We are now serving dinner Thursday thru Saturday. Our dinner menu will focus on Creole and Low Country dishes. The Cajun items will not carry the heat that may be traditional "down south" but we do have a few hot sauces to add a little more zip if you prefer. A hearty thanks to some of our regulars that showed up for dinner this past Friday night, our first night for dinner service. We will of course have most of the items we generally have for lunch available for dinner if you want something a little lighter. There is no telling what Chelsea may come up with. This past Friday it was a Chicken Jambalaya. Saturday it was a great Cajun Rice with Ground Beef. The classic Red Beans and Rice is on the menu regularly and is the Lunch Special on Mondays. For those of you wanting to enjoy our brewed coffee at home or in your office we have added to our packaged coffee offerings a pre-ground foil pack just right for 1 pot of coffee. At $ 1.50 a pack you can try a few of those varieties you wanted to try but didn't want to invest in or try a pot of flavored for a change.

St. Patty's Day Parade Set for Downtown March 15
26th Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade will be held Saturday March 15th beginning at 5:30p.m. Line-up will begin at 4pm at Muncie Central Field house parking lot. The parade will proceed south on Walnut Street to Charles St. and return via Mulberry St. Parade entries will be judged in 7 categories to include, Best: Not for Profit, Business, Youth, Political, City Organization, Most Creative and Judges Choice. First place plaques will be awarded in each category. All are invited to celebrations after the parade at several Downtown bars and eateries. Details will be released when available. Classes for Home Schooled Families at Cornerstone
The Cornerstone Arts Program is excited to offer morning classes for home school students, which will run from March 12th to April 23rd. The Arts Program offers classes children ages 4-18 in visual arts and music. Children will rotate between the classes on Wednesday mornings from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM for six weeks beginning March 12th. This new program will feature a visual arts class grouped by age and exploring a variety of media led by Linda Rose. Students will work with painting, drawing, crafts, ceramics and more while creating many take home projects both individually and in groups. The introductory music class will also be grouped by age and will be led by Kim Jewett. This interactive class will feature a variety of instruments, singing, and rhythm. All this will be presented in a fun atmosphere while encouraging students to engage and make new friends through musical play. After classes, students are free to bring their lunch and enjoy time with their new friends from class. To register, call 281-9503 or pick up a registration sheet in the building. Congratulations to Downtown's own Vera Mae's and Concannon's for their inclusion in the I-69 Long Horizons Culinary Trail map. Culinary tourism is a low-impact, high-yield tourism attraction. The Indiana Foodways Alliance, an outgrowth of the I-69 Cultural Corridor project, created the project to develop distinctive food experiences for visitors and residents throughout the state of Indiana. Susan Haller, Executive Director for Indiana Foodways Alliance, took a food tour of Muncie with Shonda Kane from the Muncie Visitors Bureau last fall. Following her visit, a listing of 6 final locations for Muncie was developed for the I-69 Trail. Those locations are: Burkie's Drive-in, Eva's Pancake House, Vera Mae's Bistro, Concannon's Pastry Shop, Lowery's Candies and Bird's Smokehouse BBQ. Muncie Eateries and Shops Featured on the Culinary Trail
Muncie is on the map! The I-69 Long Horizons Culinary Trail map that is. The Indiana Foodways Alliance is an outgrowth of the I-69 Cultural Corridor project, which was funded originally by the Ball Brothers Foundation. The Indiana Foodways Alliance's goal is to develop distinctive food experiences for visitors and residents throughout the state of Indiana. More and more communities, states and regions recognize culinary tourism as a tool for economic development. It is estimated that every dollar spent in restaurants in Indiana generates an additional $1.19 in sales for other industries in the state. Each additional $1 million spent in eating and drinking establishments in Indiana generates an additional 45.6 jobs in the state. The Indiana Foodways Alliance partnered with Ball State University's Business Fellows program through the Department of Journalism to gather vital information, create the organization's web site, and assist in launching the program. Mrs. Sheryl Swingley, a faculty co-mentor of the Ball State Business Fellows IFA project, said, "The more than 20 students who represent at least 12 majors and the two faculty mentors associated with this project have been pleasantly surprised by all of the wonderful foods and dining experiences available in the Hoosier state. We hope our work helps others enjoy the numerous and varied culinary experiences Indiana has to offer." Susan Haller, Executive Director for Indiana Foodways Alliance, took a food tour of Muncie with Shonda Kane from the Muncie Visitors Bureau last fall. Following her visit, a listing of 6 final locations for Muncie was developed for the I-69 Trail. Those locations are: Burkie's Drive-in, Eva's Pancake House, Vera Mae's Bistro, Concannon's Pastry Shop, Lowery's Candies and Bird's Smokehouse BBQ. Culinary tourism is a low-impact, high-yield tourism attraction. The Muncie Visitors Bureau and Ball State University are excited about promoting the locations and supporting Culinary Tourism. On Valentine's Day in 2003, the website MuncieDowntown.com launched with the purpose of providing a sense of unity to the newly renovated Downtown district.  Five years later, the site has been sucessful at bringing together the many individual efforts contributing to the redevelopment of Downtown Muncie, Indiana. From the river to the railroad tracks and all things in-between, MuncieDowntown.com provides a centralized source for up-to-date news and information from many downtown resources - including the Muncie Visitors Bureau, Chamber of Commerce, Horizon Convention Center, Downtown Development and Downtown Business Council and more. The independently owned website offers a wealth of information about the heart of our city to Delaware County and East Central Indiana residents, as well as potential visitors to Downtown Muncie. Doc's Music Hall presents Bobby Bare Jr. on Wednesday, February 20th. Tickets are $7.  Bobby Bare, Jr. is a Grammy Nominated, American musician who has recorded several solo albums. He is the son of country musician Bobby Bare and at age 5 he was nominated for a Grammy along with his father for the song, "Daddy What If." Originally Bobby started out in the root's-rock outfit, Bare Jr. They released two major label records, 1998's, Boo-Tay and 2000's Brainwasher. Currently he plays with a revolving door lineup is called The Young Criminals Starvation League. They have released three studio albums, an EP and a Live album to date, "Bobby Bare, Jr.'s The Young Criminals Starvation League [2002]," "OK - I'm Sorry... Cornerstone Arts Program Begins March 10
Classes start soon at Cornerstone Center for the Arts. The twelve week session of classes is well underway. The upcoming six week session will begin the week of March 10th, running until April 24th. The Arts Program offers classes for youth and adults in numerous areas of the arts.
